Celebrity Clothing: How Do They Get It?

Ever wonder where your favorite celebrity’s clothing goes after they’ve been photographed wearing them out and about or at an award show? Yes, they have huge walk-in closets filled with haute couture from every big name designer, but they don’t keep everything you’ve seen them photographed in.

Celebrities like Rihanna, Beyonce, and Kim Kardashian have a few options on how they get their clothes. Of course, they’re seen shopping a ton all over the world, but a lot of clothing they receive is sent to them for free, either to keep or to borrow for an event. The stars are looked at as walking advertisements for big name fashion houses. When celebrities walk out draped in the newest pieces from designers like Gucci and Balenciaga, it generates buzz for not only the fashion house they’re rocking, but also the trend. Sometimes, the celeb’s publicist requests designs to be made for free, in exchange to get the designer’s names or specific style out in the world. Celebrities may even be under contract with certain designers. According to the website Stories of The World, actress Jennifer Lawrence, “has signed a 3 year contract with Dior which states she would wear their dresses at major events and magazine ads charging a fee of $20 million in return.”

So what happens to the clothes after a celebrity is photographed? Some pieces get sent back to the designer, it’s kept by the celebrity, or it’s donated. The Kardashians, (among other celebrities) auction off their designer clothing and accessories in eBay sales, raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars and donating some of the proceeds to various charities.

So the next time you find yourself obsessed with a current celeb’s style, you have a few options on how to obtain it. You can try and get the original piece that the celebrity is auctioning off on eBay, you can hit up the designer and see if they still have the item in stock, or you can wait for fast fashion shops like H&M and Forever 21 to stock a dupe item. You’ll for sure have the item longer in your closet than the celebrity.
