Are We Turning into Marty Mcfly?
May 22, 2017
By now you have probably seen tons of articles about the return of 80s fashion trending. Many of these trends were sported in the most iconic movie of the 80s, “Back to the Future.” Think mirrored sunglasses, Nike high tops, and denim jackets. Are we essentially starting to dress like Marty Mcfly? Is it possible that we are living the reality that Amblin Entertainment has created for us?
Mirrored Sunglasses
Reflective sunglasses have been around for a while, but recently their popularity has had consistent growth. Just like Marty, people have been rocking these babies out in public as a fashion statement. Not only do the mirrored sunglasses look cool but, they have a reflective optical coating on the lens to decrease the amount of light that will pass through. Traditionally these sunglasses were made for outdoor sport since they lessen the amount of light that passes through. This trend started to gain popularity in the 1980s and can be seen above on Marty and in current time.
Nike High Tops
Although our Nikes don’t light up on the bottom, we do have our high tops! The most popular forms of high tops are Nike Air Jordans and the Air Force 1 High. Air Jordans first came out in 1985 and now have transformed into a lighter weight version. In Back to the Future, Marty wears a pair of Nikes that are similar to the Air Jordan 7 Retro. If you take a peak at street style trends, odds are high you’re going to see someone with their high tops on.
Denim Jackets
Denim jackets never seem to go out of style. Even with that said, more and more people have been wearing their denim jackets out. Jean jackets have been around since 1880, when Levi’s came out with their first denim jacket. The jackets peaked popularity in the 1980s when everyone was wearing them. However, after that denim started to take more forms than just jackets. It wasn’t until late that they started to become back into fashion.
As some say, trends have a tendency to be recycled over the years and perhaps this is just fashion living up to that expectation. Trend or not, the 80’s is a time period that has the power to influence consumers choices even after happening over 20 years ago. With that being said, maybe the 80’s won’t ever die. Instead, it will continue to live on and further influence the fashion statements that people choose to make today. It’s safe to say Marty Mcfly would be proud.
