There is something about denim on denim that comes off as intimidating, but that shouldn’t scare you from rockin’ the trend. Denim on denim- or the Canadian Tuxedo- can be a tricky style to master. If done right, it looks fabulous, but if done wrong, flashbacks of 2001 Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears start popping into our heads. The key to pulling off a double denim look is balance.  Here are a few tips on the do’s and don’ts of styling denim on denim, courtesy of Stylecaster.com.

DO: Play around with colors

To get comfortable with wearing denim on denim, start off by matching different shades of denim. For example, try white jeans with a blue denim jacket, or black jeans and a chambray shirt. It’s hard to go wrong with this look.

 

 

DON’T: Wear denim accessories

Stick to denim clothing. Stay away from denim shoes, hats, handbags, or any other kind of denim accessory.

 

DO: Use denim shades to flatter body parts

As a rule of thumb for styling denim on denim, the lighter shades of denim draw more attention to the body parts they cover, whereas darker washes create a slimming effect. Go for darker washes on the bottom and lighter on the top.

 

 

DON’T: Wear ALL the same weight or wash

You don’t want to look too matchy-matchy (cue Justin and Britney.)

 

DO: Distress

Don’t be afraid to wear ripped jeans. The distressed look adds some movement and a flare to your look.

 

 

DON’T: Look to Westerns for inspiration

When you think of denim, images of cowboys may come to mind – you don’t want to reference these! The cowboy denim look can end up being too exaggerated. This means stay away from accessories that can come across as too “cowboyish”: cowboy boots, cowboy hats, bolo ties, and Western belts.

 

DO: Dress it up

Don’t forget to have some fun when experimenting with the double denim. Elevate your look with luxe items including statement heels, a tuxedo blazer, or even a sexy red lip.
